House Rules

  • All casters, regardless of type, have access to all 0-level spells for their class at all times. They do not need to prepare these spells and are able to cast them at will an unlimited number of times per day.

    • The cure minor wounds spell is removed from all spell lists, and is replaced with the stabilize spell. This spell has the effect of restoring a person with negative HP to 0 HP. It has no other effect and does not restore non-lethal damage.
    • A caster may have a number of light spells active at a time equal to his caster level. All subsequent castings cause the existing spells to wink out sequentially.
  • The 4th-edition technique of spell attack rolls is now used in lieu of defensive saving throws. Saving throws are still used to resist ongoing effects.

  • Casters wishing to create magical items may “receive” XP donations from any interested parties to offset some or all of the costs of creating said magical items. The donator(s) must be present for at least half the creation time of the item in question and must give up the XP willingly.

  • Knowledge (linguistics) (Int) replaces Speak Language and Read/Write language as a skill. See Languages and Alphabets for details.

  • FYIA Tokens: Every time a character levels, they earn a number of FYIA tokens equal to their new character level. They also earn one “freebie” token per session that is returned to the DM at the end of the session if it is unspent. At any time, a player may spend a token to:

    • Turn any d20 roll into a 20, or percentile roll into a 100
    • Automatically confirm any critical, or automatically succeed on any action that still fails
    • Maximize any damage roll
    • Minimize any damage roll incoming to the player’s character
    • Emulate a feat for one action (character must meet all prerequisites for the feat)
    • Get a free DM hint
    • Freeform, subject to DM approval

When using this token, the player takes over the narrative and describes what happens (i.e. missed shot bounces off the wall and hits, secret hidden weak point, pulls a rock to hide behind out of Hammerspace, etc). It is insufficient to simply say “I hit” or “I save.”

  • The Tumble skill’s use to avoid attacks of opportunity in the base rules is overpowered; instead, a character may make a tumble check to replace their AC when moving through an opponent’s threatened square. The Mobility feat stacks with this.
  • Spell Power: Taking a page from 4e on this — instead of spells and effects having a fixed save DC, saving throws are instead converted to static defenses (10 + relevant modifier) and casters instead make attack rolls based on the spell’s (original) save DC. A caster’s spell power is the total modifier he applies to a given spell’s attack roll, and is usually equal to the spell’s level + the caster’s relevant ability score modifier.
  • Transformations: When using polymorph, alter self, wild shape or any other shape-shifting magic or effect, if a character wishes to transform into something that he has not personally encountered, he is entitled to make a special knowledge check using the knowledge skill appropriate to the creature type. The DC of this check is 15 + the creature’s Hit Dice. Success means that the character is able to transform as normal; failure means that the character cannot use that form until he either encounters a living example of the form or he gains another rank in the appropriate knowledge skill, at which time he is entitled to make a new check.
